The Safe Places Program

The Safe Places Program invites faculty, staff, graduate assistants, and resident advisors to open their space as a Safe Place for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning (LGBTQ) individuals and their straight Allies, providing support, a listening ear, and a welcome environment by serving as a resource, an educator, and an advocate for a climate that not only tolerates but embraces diversity.

Safe Places strives to create a community of support and progressive change emblematic of UT's commitment to the betterment of the human condition, and to celebrating diversity in all its wonderful variety.

The program was started in 2003 by Spectrum's then-President David Mann. It was re-launched in the Fall semester of 2007 by Noah Gillespie and Allison Dow. As a vital part of the new Office of LGBT Initiatives, it is the University's goal to continue the program's growth through ongoing collaboration with Spectrum and other diversity initiatives on campus.
